Celebrating Creativity, Growth & Extraordinary Achievements

Every year, our Online Showcase becomes one of the biggest projects undertaken by the Unity Studios community.

Over six months, our mentees work alongside mentors to write, compose, create, rehearse, film, edit, experiment and refine projects that celebrate their unique gifts and interests. From original films and musical performances to science investigations and visual art exhibitions, each project represents countless hours of dedication, problem-solving, creativity and personal growth.

This showcase is about so much more than a finished product.

It is about developing confidence, communication, teamwork, resilience, creative thinking and the courage to share something meaningful with others.

As you explore this year’s collection, we hope you gain insight into the incredible work our mentees and team achieve together every week.

This year has been particularly special, with Unity Studios recently being recognised as the Winner of the 2026 Penrith Local Business Awards for Outstanding Educational Services. 🔬 Science & Discovery at Unity Studios

Curiosity, Wonder & the Natural World

For one unforgettable week, our studio became home to a very special guest.

“Wiggles”, our Orange Lacewing butterfly chrysalis, captured the hearts of mentees and staff alike as we observed one of nature’s most incredible processes—metamorphosis.

What began with a tiny wriggle quickly grew into daily excitement, conversations about biology and countless moments of curiosity and wonder. Through observing and caring for Wiggles, our mentees explored life cycles, transformation and the beauty of the natural world.

Although Wiggles emerged over the long weekend, we were fortunate enough to capture the magical moment on timelapse so our entire community could share in the experience.

Watch Wiggles’ remarkable journey unfold and celebrate the wonder of science, patience and discovery.

Inspired by hands-on learning experiences? Our Education Support and Uability programs regularly incorporate creative and interest-based learning opportunities designed to spark curiosity and build confidence.

Meet Wiggles

Chemistry, Geology & Curiosity

Can rocks really grow?

This fascinating chemistry and geology experiment had our mentees asking questions, making observations and experiencing science in action.

Using colourful mineral salts and sodium silicate, we created our own “Crystal Gardens” and watched extraordinary plant-like structures form before our eyes.

This activity wasn’t about finding the right answer.

It was about slowing down, observing, wondering and appreciating the incredible processes that shape our natural world.

Science experiences like these help foster curiosity, critical thinking and a lifelong love of learning.

Watch our Crystal Gardens grow and discover why sometimes the most powerful learning begins with simply asking:

“How did that happen?”

Learning, Growth & Achievement

Foundation: Preschool – Year 3

💌 Looking Beyond Ourselves: Letters to Luke & Novelinda

As part of our Foundation Education Support program, our young learners participated in a very special literacy and community project—writing letters to Unity Studios’ sponsor children, Luke and Novelinda, through Compassion Australia.

Compassion is an international child development organisation that works alongside local churches to support children living in poverty by helping provide access to education, healthcare, nutrition and encouragement. One of the most meaningful aspects of sponsorship is the opportunity to build genuine connections through letter writing and cultural exchange.

This project provided our mentees with far more than simply a writing task.

Together, we learnt about the Philippines, explored maps and cultures, discussed similarities and differences between our lives, and considered how children around the world may experience life differently from us. We discovered that Luke enjoys drawing and painting and is proudly achieving highly at school, while young Novelinda loves drawing, playing with dolls and dreams of becoming a teacher one day.

Through writing their letters, our learners practised a wide range of literacy skills including:

✏️ Introducing themselves and sharing personal information
✏️ Organising ideas into complete sentences
✏️ Developing written communication and letter-writing conventions
✏️ Considering audience and purpose when writing
✏️ Asking thoughtful questions and expressing kindness and encouragement

Most importantly, this experience encouraged our mentees to look beyond themselves.

It created opportunities to develop empathy, gratitude and a greater understanding of the wider world. It prompted meaningful conversations about helping others, recognising our shared humanity and understanding that even small acts of kindness, such as a simple letter, can make someone feel seen, valued and connected.

At Unity Studios, we believe literacy is about so much more than reading and writing.

It is about communication.

It is about relationships.

It is about learning to use our words to encourage, connect and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

We are incredibly proud of our mentees for approaching this project with such care, curiosity and compassion and look forward to continuing our friendship with Luke and Novelinda in the years to come.

Exploring the Physics of Motion – HSC Physics Depth Study

Mason has been part of the Unity Studios community since 2020, and over the years we have had the privilege of watching him grow into a thoughtful, dedicated and highly capable young learner.

This year, Mason has continued to excel in his HSC studies, consistently achieving outstanding results, including assessment marks of over 90%.

Featured here is Mason’s HSC Physics Depth Study, “How Radius Affects Speed in Uniform Circular Motion.” Through practical experimentation and scientific analysis, Mason investigated the relationship between radius, velocity and centripetal force, demonstrating a strong understanding of complex physics concepts and the scientific inquiry process.

This project highlights far more than academic achievement alone. It reflects Mason’s curiosity, perseverance and growing confidence in applying scientific thinking to real-world questions. Through planning investigations, analysing data and communicating findings, Mason has continued to develop important skills in critical thinking, problem-solving and scientific communication.

We are incredibly proud of Mason’s dedication and the progress he has made throughout his educational journey.

His achievements serve as a wonderful reminder of what can happen when young people are supported to pursue their interests, challenge themselves and strive towards their goals.

Congratulations, Mason, on another outstanding year of learning and achievement. We look forward to seeing where your journey takes you next.

🌟 Finding Our Voice: Lucas Leydon

Lucas has been part of the Unity Studios community through a scholarship during 2025 and 2026, and throughout this time has demonstrated remarkable growth as a thoughtful, articulate and compassionate young person.

At the beginning of 2025, Lucas transitioned to Richmond High School and, in an extraordinary achievement, was appointed School Captain during his HSC year, an honour that is rarely seen for a student who has joined a school so recently. This appointment speaks volumes about Lucas’ character, leadership and the respect he has earned within his school community.

In this original persuasive speech, “The Kindness Economy,” Lucas explores powerful themes of empathy, social responsibility, dignity and the importance of unity within society. Through thoughtful reflection and passionate writing, he challenges us to consider what kind of world we wish to create and whether kindness, compassion and community can become stronger guiding principles in our future.

This piece is a beautiful example of the power of written communication and the importance of young people developing the confidence to think critically, explore complex ideas and share their perspectives with others.

At Unity Studios, we believe every young person has a voice worth hearing.

Lucas’ work reminds us that education is not simply about acquiring knowledge, but about learning to communicate, lead, advocate and contribute meaningfully to the world around us.

We are incredibly proud of Lucas, his achievements and the thoughtful young leader he has become, and we look forward with excitement to seeing where his journey takes him next.

⚠️ Parental Guidance Recommended

This presentation discusses themes, characters and imagery from the Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) franchise, which some younger viewers may find unsettling. Parent discretion is advised.

At Unity Studios, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens when young people are given the opportunity to explore topics they are genuinely passionate about.

For many children and young people, special interests can become powerful gateways to learning, helping to develop confidence, communication skills, research abilities and deeper engagement with education.

In this project, Lorelei takes us on a journey into the world of Five Nights at Freddy’s, sharing information about the franchise, its characters and the aspects that make it such an interesting topic for fans around the world.

✍️ Creative Writing at Unity Studios!

Finding Our Voice Through Storytelling

Stories have the power to transport us to new worlds, explore different perspectives and give life to ideas that may otherwise remain only in our imagination.

At Unity Studios, Creative Writing provides a safe and encouraging space for people of all ages and abilities to develop confidence in expressing themselves through words. Through prompts, world-building, character creation and storytelling challenges, our writers are encouraged to explore their interests, experiment with different genres and discover their unique creative voice.

The pieces featured in this collection showcase the incredible diversity of imagination within our community. From historical fiction and mystery to fantasy adventures and suspenseful tales, each work reflects the individual passions, personalities and creativity of its author.

This year’s showcase includes writing from both emerging and experienced authors.

Danielle Laverty shares her love of historical fiction, mysteries and science fiction through a series of creative writing quests, demonstrating how a simple image or prompt can spark powerful storytelling ideas and memorable characters.

Isaac Whipple invites us into richly imagined fantasy worlds inspired by tabletop roleplaying games, mythology and epic storytelling. His writing highlights not only remarkable creativity, but also sophisticated world-building, lore creation and imaginative thinking. Some of Isaac’s works explore darker fantasy themes and may be better suited to older readers with parental guidance.

Through creative writing, our mentees develop skills in:

✍️ Written communication and literacy
📖 Imagination and storytelling
💭 Critical and creative thinking
🗣️ Self-expression and confidence
🌏 Perspective-taking and empathy

At Unity Studios, we believe every person has stories worth telling.

Whether writing their very first paragraph or developing entire fictional worlds, our writers continue to inspire us with their creativity, courage and willingness to share their ideas with others.

We invite you to step into these stories, explore new worlds and celebrate the voices of our incredible authors. 💜

🎭 Drama & Film at Unity Studios!

Bringing Original Stories to Life

Pirates, Presents & Christmas Chaos

What happens when a group of pirates bury their Christmas presents… and then completely forget which treasure belongs to who?

The result is a wonderfully chaotic festive adventure filled with pirates, Secret Santa surprises and an unexpected team of Christmas superheroes!

Created entirely by our Primary Drama mentees, this short film showcases the incredible imagination, humour and creativity that emerges when young people are encouraged to explore storytelling, character creation and collaborative performance.

Throughout this project, our mentees worked together to devise characters, develop scenes, contribute ideas and bring their festive world to life. From pirate captains and mischievous treasure hunters to heroes such as Santa Claws, Boxing Day Man, Bauble Boy and The Present (Time Wizard), every moment celebrates the joy of imagination and creative play.

At Unity Studios, drama is about so much more than performing.

Through drama and filmmaking, young people build confidence, communication skills, teamwork, emotional expression and creative problem-solving, all within a safe, nurturing and encouraging environment.

🎵 Music Showcase at Unity Studios

Confidence, Creativity & Collaboration

Original Works & Composition at Unity Studios

There is something incredibly special about sharing a piece of music that didn’t exist before.

Throughout this year, many of our mentees have challenged themselves to move beyond learning existing songs and instead step into the role of composer, songwriter and creator.

Creating original music requires imagination, persistence and courage. It invites young people to explore their own ideas, emotions and interests while developing important skills such as problem-solving, communication, collaboration and creative thinking.

Some of these pieces began as simple melodies or rhythms played during sessions. Others emerged through improvisation, experimentation and months of refinement. Each composition tells a unique story and reflects the individual gifts, personalities and creative journeys of the mentees who created them.

At Unity Studios, we believe that every person has something meaningful to say and that music can provide a powerful avenue for self-expression and confidence building.

We are incredibly proud to share these original works with you and invite you to celebrate the creativity, courage and growth demonstrated by each composer.

After all, every great piece of music begins with a single idea and someone brave enough to share it.

Joey O’Reilly also produced two original pieces. These can be heard in the Art Showcase below.

Collaboration & Ensemble at Unity Studios

Creating Something Greater Together

Music has a unique way of bringing people together.

Throughout these ensemble performances, our mentees have experienced the joy, challenge and reward that comes from creating music as a team. Whether singing together, accompanying one another on different instruments or combining ideas from separate groups, these performances celebrate the power of collaboration and connection.

Performing as part of an ensemble requires much more than simply playing the right notes. It encourages participants to listen carefully, communicate effectively, adapt to others, show patience and work together towards a shared goal. These experiences help build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging within our community.

Many of these performances began with individual strengths and interests that gradually grew into something much bigger. Through encouragement, teamwork and a willingness to support one another, our mentees have created performances that are full of energy, creativity and heart.

At Unity Studios, we believe some of the most meaningful learning occurs when people come together, celebrate each other’s gifts and discover that they can achieve more collectively than they ever could alone.

We invite you to enjoy these performances and celebrate the wonderful moments of connection, confidence and collaboration that have made them possible.

Because when creativity is shared, something truly special happens.

Instrumental & Performance Highlights at Unity Studios

Building Confidence, One Performance at a Time

Every performance tells a story.

For some of our mentees, these performances represent their very first time sharing their music with others. For others, they showcase years of dedication, persistence and growing confidence in their craft.

This collection celebrates the incredible diversity of musical journeys within our community. From beginner musicians discovering a love of rhythm and melody, to more experienced performers refining their technique and expression, each performance highlights the unique gifts and personalities of the individuals involved.

Learning an instrument involves so much more than simply playing notes on a page.

It requires patience, courage, perseverance and a willingness to continue learning through both successes and mistakes. Along the way, our mentees develop confidence, self-expression, goal setting skills, resilience and the ability to share something meaningful with others.

Performing can be both exciting and vulnerable. It takes bravery to step forward, try something new and share your creativity with an audience.

At Unity Studios, we celebrate every stage of that journey.

Whether it is learning a first chord, performing with greater confidence, experimenting with improvisation or mastering a challenging piece, every achievement is worthy of recognition.

We invite you to enjoy these performances and celebrate the dedication, growth and creativity that each mentee has demonstrated throughout the year.

Because every musician starts somewhere, and every performance is another step forward in their creative journey.

We run group and 1:1 music sessions at our Penrith Studio and Online.

🌟 Artist Spotlight: Emma Schmahl

Advanced Musician • Composer • Actor • Visual Artist • Emerging Creative Practitioner

Emma has been a valued member of the Unity Studios community since February 2019. Over the past seven years, we have had the privilege of watching her grow from a young musician into a thoughtful, creative and highly accomplished emerging artist.

Throughout her journey, Emma has developed skills across guitar, music theory, composition, performance, music production and recording, while also exploring her talents as an actor and visual artist. She continually approaches learning with curiosity, dedication and a willingness to challenge herself creatively.

Emma’s HSC portfolio represents the culmination of years of hard work, experimentation and artistic growth. It is a reflection not only of her musical abilities, but also of her persistence, creativity and commitment to refining her craft.

This collection showcases two distinct aspects of Emma’s musicianship.

Her cover of Mary on a Cross highlights her interpretive skills, emotional expression and confidence as a performer, while her original HSC composition demonstrates her creativity, technical understanding and ability to communicate ideas through composition and storytelling.

During 2025 and 2026, Emma also completed over 60 hours of work experience with Unity Studios, further developing her skills in live production, studio recording and music technology. More recently, she has immersed herself in the recording studio environment, continuing to broaden her creative experiences and prepare for future pathways within the arts.

Emma’s journey is a beautiful example of what can happen when passion, perseverance and opportunity come together. Her work reminds us that creativity flourishes in environments that encourage curiosity, celebrate growth and empower young people to pursue their unique gifts.

We are incredibly proud of all that Emma has achieved and feel honoured to have been part of her journey over the past seven years. We look forward with great excitement to seeing where her creativity, talent and dedication will lead her next.

Imagination, Expression & Creativity

😂 Meme Culture: Creativity Through Humour

Art doesn’t always involve paintbrushes and pencils.

Sometimes creativity looks like internet culture, shared jokes and finding humour in the everyday.

Memes have become a modern form of storytelling and self-expression, allowing people to communicate ideas, emotions and experiences through images, references and humour.

In this playful project, Bodhi has created a collage of some of his favourite memes and internet characters, bringing together a collection of images that make him laugh, spark memories and reflect his unique sense of humour.

While this piece may seem light-hearted, projects like these encourage important skills including:

💻 Digital literacy and media understanding
💭 Personal expression and identity
😂 Understanding humour and audience engagement
🗣️ Communication through visual media
🎨 Exploring contemporary forms of creativity

At Unity Studios, we believe creativity can take many forms.

Whether through painting, music, filmmaking, storytelling or even meme culture, every person’s interests and passions can become meaningful opportunities for learning, connection and self-expression.

This collage reminds us that creativity doesn’t always need to be serious.

Sometimes, creativity is simply about sharing the things that make us smile.

Every piece within this collection tells a unique story.

Some artworks reflect personal interests and passions, while others showcase new skills, experimentation and the willingness to step outside of comfort zones. Together, they represent hundreds of hours of creativity, dedication and artistic exploration.

At Unity Studios, we believe art provides a powerful opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to communicate, connect and celebrate their individual gifts.

This year’s showcase is made even more special through the inclusion of original music composed and performed by members of our community.

A special thank you to Emma Gordon for her beautiful original composition, as well as Joey O’Reilly for contributing two original pieces that help bring this exhibition to life.
