Preparing for Employment and Life After School
Finding the right pathway after school can be challenging, particularly when a young person needs additional time, guidance or individualised support to develop practical skills.
Pathfinder Employability is Unity Studios’ developing employment readiness program in Penrith. Designed for people aged 16 and over, it combines practical education, personalised mentoring and supported small-group learning.
Our program helps participants explore their strengths, develop everyday capabilities and prepare for future opportunities. These may include employment, vocational training, further education or creative self-employment.
Importantly, Pathfinder is not limited to recent school leavers. It also welcomes enquiries from young adults who want to strengthen their skills, build confidence or reconsider their next steps.
As part of Unity Studios’ Uability disability capacity-building services, Pathfinder focuses on meaningful goals and individual progress rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Who Is Pathfinder Employability For?
Pathfinder may suit people aged 16+ who would benefit from structured, education-focused support as they prepare for employment or further study.
For example, participants may be:
- Preparing to leave school and considering their next steps.
- Exploring employment, apprenticeships or vocational training.
- Interested in TAFE, university or another education pathway.
- Developing confidence with communication and workplace expectations.
- Strengthening literacy, numeracy, digital skills or organisation.
- Returning to learning after time away from education.
- Considering creative enterprise or self-employment.
Although participants may have different aspirations, they share an opportunity to develop practical skills in a supportive environment.
Before enrolment, we meet with each prospective participant to explore their goals, learning needs and suitability for the program.
What Skills Will Participants Develop?
Pathfinder combines individualised goals with practical learning activities. As a result, participants can work on skills relevant to their own future plans.
Functional Literacy and Numeracy

Everyday reading, writing and numeracy skills can influence confidence at work, in education and within the community.
Depending on individual needs, participants may practise:
- Reading instructions, forms and workplace information.
- Writing emails, messages and short documents.
- Understanding money, budgets and everyday calculations.
- Using measurements, time and schedules.
- Applying literacy and numeracy to practical situations.
Rather than focusing only on worksheets, mentors connect learning to meaningful activities and real-world examples.
Digital Literacy and Technology

Digital confidence is increasingly important for employment, study and everyday independence.
Therefore, Pathfinder provides opportunities to develop skills such as:
- Typing and keyboard use.
- Email and online communication.
- Word processing and document preparation.
- Online research and information evaluation.
- Digital organisation and file management.
- Using technology for applications, study and work.
Participants can build on their existing skills while learning to use technology more independently.
Organisation and Executive Functioning

Planning, managing time and completing tasks can present challenges in education and employment.
To strengthen these skills, mentors may support participants to:
- Break larger tasks into manageable steps.
- Follow schedules and meet deadlines.
- Organise resources and personal information.
- Set priorities and make decisions.
- Develop strategies for attention and task completion.
- Reflect on challenges and adjust their approach.
Over time, participants are encouraged to take greater ownership of their routines, decisions and progress.
Communication and Workplace Skills

Successful participation in work and further education involves more than technical skills.
For this reason, Pathfinder includes opportunities to practise:
- Starting and maintaining conversations.
- Asking questions and requesting assistance.
- Listening and responding appropriately.
- Working cooperatively with others.
- Understanding workplace expectations.
- Managing feedback and resolving difficulties.
- Building confidence in unfamiliar situations.
Where appropriate, small-group activities provide a setting to practise these skills with mentor guidance.
Employment Preparation

Participants can explore the practical steps involved in seeking employment.
Activities may include:
- Identifying personal strengths and interests.
- Researching industries and employment options.
- Preparing résumés and job applications.
- Practising interview questions.
- Understanding workplace routines and responsibilities.
- Developing professional communication.
- Exploring realistic short-term and long-term goals.
However, not every participant will be ready to apply for work immediately. Some may first need to strengthen foundational skills or explore suitable career options.
Independence and Personal Development

Employment readiness also involves confidence, self-awareness and everyday independence.
Consequently, Pathfinder supports participants to develop problem-solving strategies, make informed choices and understand their individual support needs.
Where relevant, learning may include community participation, personal organisation and planning for greater independence.
Learning areas include:
- Functional literacy and numeracy for everyday life, study and work
- Digital literacy, typing and computer skills
- Organisation, planning and executive functioning
- Communication, teamwork and workplace expectations
- Résumés, job applications and interview preparation
- Exploring personal strengths, interests and future opportunities
- Goal setting, independence and self-directed learning
Participants will be encouraged to explore pathways that suit their interests and aspirations, including creative enterprise, TAFE or other further education, and specialist employment services.
Our Point of Difference – Learning Through Creativity
At Unity Studios, we recognise that employment readiness involves more than academic knowledge and workplace skills. Confidence, communication, creativity, problem-solving and the ability to complete projects are equally important.
What makes Pathfinder Employability different is the opportunity for participants to incorporate Art or Drama into their individualised learning program.
These creative electives provide practical opportunities to develop transferable skills in an engaging and supportive environment.
Drama – Building Confidence and Communication

Drama offers opportunities to develop interpersonal skills through purposeful, creative activities.
For example, participants may practise:
- Speaking confidently and expressing ideas.
- Listening, responding and communicating with others.
- Understanding body language and social cues.
- Working collaboratively towards shared outcomes.
- Managing unfamiliar situations and building self-confidence.
- Developing presentation and public-speaking skills.
Through role-play, improvisation and collaborative activities, participants can practise skills that may also support workplace communication, interviews and participation in further education.
Art – Creative Thinking and Project Management

Art provides opportunities to develop planning, organisation, problem-solving and task-completion skills through practical creative projects.
Depending on their interests and individual goals, participants may work on:
- Developing an idea from concept to completion.
- Planning the stages of a creative project.
- Organising materials, resources and time.
- Following instructions and meeting project expectations.
- Managing challenges and adapting their approach.
- Presenting and reflecting on completed work.
- Collaborating with others where appropriate.
In addition, creative projects may provide opportunities to explore entrepreneurship, product development and future self-employment interests.
Choice, Individualisation and Meaningful Learning
Participants can elect to incorporate Art or Drama according to their interests, learning needs and employment-readiness goals.
For some, Drama may provide an accessible way to practise communication and build confidence. For others, Art may offer a practical context for developing organisation, perseverance and project management.
The creative elective is not simply an additional recreational activity. It provides another setting in which participants can practise and apply the functional skills they are developing through Pathfinder.
Our mentors connect these experiences to individual goals, helping participants recognise how skills developed through creative learning may transfer into employment, education and everyday life.
Creative elective availability and scheduling will be confirmed as part of individual program planning.
An Individualised Six-Month Program of Support
Meaningful skill development takes time. For that reason, Pathfinder is designed around an initial six-month foundation.
Getting to Know the Participant
We begin by learning about each participant’s strengths, interests, goals and support needs.
Together, we identify priorities and develop an individualised learning plan.
Building and Practising Skills
Participants then work towards their goals through structured activities, mentor guidance and practical learning experiences.
As confidence develops, mentors introduce opportunities for greater independence and self-directed learning.
Reviewing Progress and Planning Next Steps
Throughout the program, our team monitors progress and adapts activities where needed.
Towards the end of the initial six months, participants and their support networks can consider achievements, ongoing needs and possible future pathways.
Some participants may be ready to explore further education or employment assistance. Others may benefit from continuing their Pathfinder programming beyond six months.
The initial six-month foundation is a recommended starting point, not a guarantee of employment or a fixed completion deadline.
Exploring Future Education and Employment Pathways
Pathfinder Employability helps participants explore opportunities that reflect their individual strengths, interests and aspirations.
As participants develop confidence and practical skills, our mentors support them to investigate possible next steps. These may include creative enterprise, further education, vocational training or employment.
Creative Enterprise and Self-Employment
For participants interested in creative industries, self-employment may offer an opportunity to develop their interests into meaningful projects or business ideas.
Through creative activities and project-based learning, participants can explore product development, planning, budgeting, marketing and other foundational business skills.
Where appropriate, we can also help participants investigate external programs, resources and services that support creative enterprise and microbusiness development.
Further Education and Vocational Training
Some participants may wish to continue their education through vocational training, apprenticeships, university or other recognised learning pathways.
To support these aspirations, Pathfinder helps participants research suitable courses, understand entry requirements and explore available learning supports.
In addition, participants can strengthen the study skills, organisation, digital literacy and independence needed to prepare for further education.
Employment and Workplace Opportunities
For participants interested in entering the workforce, Pathfinder focuses on developing practical employment-readiness skills and exploring suitable career pathways.
For example, participants may research different industries, identify employment interests, prepare applications and practise workplace communication.
As participants become more confident and prepared, we can help them identify relevant external employment services, vocational programs and other opportunities for further assistance.
Planning Meaningful Next Steps
Every participant’s pathway will be different. Therefore, we work collaboratively with participants and their support networks to identify realistic goals and consider appropriate next steps.
Some participants may be ready to explore employment or further education after their initial six-month program. Others may benefit from continued skill development, additional mentoring or further exploration of their interests.
Pathfinder provides individualised employment-readiness and capacity-building support. While we help participants prepare for future opportunities and explore appropriate pathways, we do not provide job placement or guarantee employment outcomes.
Small Group Learning with Individualised Support
Pathfinder combines structured education with opportunities for supported interaction.
Small-group learning allows participants to practise communication, collaboration and problem-solving alongside others. At the same time, mentors can adapt activities to reflect individual goals and learning needs.
Our relationship-first approach helps us understand how each participant learns best.
In addition, we encourage participants to contribute to their own planning, recognise progress and develop increasing confidence in making decisions.
Proposed Program Times and Commencement
Pathfinder Employability is currently welcoming expressions of interest.
We are considering daytime programming on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, with a proposed attendance window of 10:00 am–3:00 pm, including a one-hour lunch break.
Final session arrangements will depend on participant needs, suitable enrolments and program planning.
The first group is proposed to commence once three suitable participants have confirmed their enrolment arrangements.
As interest grows, additional group opportunities may become available.

NDIS Funding and Program Suitability
Pathfinder is being developed within Unity Studios’ Uability disability capacity-building services.
Some participants may have relevant NDIS goals and funding associated with employment preparation, including supports within the Finding and Keeping a Job category.
However, funding suitability depends on the participant’s individual plan, applicable support items and current NDIS requirements.
Before commencing, Unity Studios will discuss proposed supports, individual goals, funding arrangements and service agreements with the participant and their support network, where appropriate.
We do not assume that every NDIS plan will fund Pathfinder Employability.
Expressions of interest are open now. The first group is proposed to commence once three suitable participants are confirmed. Daytime programming is being considered for Tuesdays and Thursdays, with final attendance arrangements determined as the program develops.

No. Pathfinder develops practical skills and helps participants explore future pathways. Where suitable, we may identify external employment services that provide additional assistance.
